Hospices specialise in care for the terminally ill, and can really help carers. A quarter of a million patients are cared for by hospices in the UK each year, either in a hospice or in their own home.
Hospice care provides palliative care to improve the lives of people whose illness is not curable.
Palliative care can include:
Medical and nursing care
Pain and symptom control
Rehabilitation
Therapies, including physiotherapy and complementary therapies
Spiritual support
Practical and financial advice
Bereavement care for patients’ carers, families and friends.
In Northamptonshire, we have two NHS-led hospices - Cransley and Cynthia Spencer - although these are both also part-funded by charitable funds.
Cransley Hospice
Cransley Hospice in Kettering is a purpose-built 9-bed unit, designed to the highest possible standards and provides an ideal environment in which to care for patients. The hospice is also the base for the community Macmillan Nurses who work closely with local GPs, district nurses and Marie Curie Nurses. The team of specialist nurses, doctors and therapists based within the hospice provide a comprehensive service of care to the patient for whose illness may no longer be curable, be they in the hospice itself, local hospitals or in their own homes.

With its 20 beds and team of specialist doctors, nurses and therapists, Cynthia Spencer Hospice is part of the NHS serving a population in excess of 300,000. The dedicated team based at the Hospice provides a comprehensive service mainly for cancer patients (and their families) for whom a cure may no longer be possible. The hospice is also the base for the community Macmillan Nurses, the Hospice@Home team, therapists and many other specialists who are referred to as the multi-disciplinary team. The care is focused on the 'whole person' incorporating the physical, psychological and spiritual needs of patients. We ensure that the patient's quality of life is maintained by working in partnership with family and carers. Our primary concern is to respect our patient's dignity and choice in a friendly and supportive environment.
